So I'm starting a thread here for people to not just post links to their journals, but to hopefully say a little something about them. It's great that you have an LJ, but why would I want to check it out? There are as many different ways to use LJ as there are LJ users. How do you use yours?

By way of example:

My journal: http://starchy.livejournal.com

What's there: I post raw writing (mostly fiction) and works in progress, various contemplations of Life In General(tm), your vaguely standard sorts of web-flotsom and web-jetsom, the occasional political rant, and absolutely no quizzes or polls. I'm currently re-posting my travel diaries from Europe, written a few years back, one episode per day.

So, who's next?

Why Blog?

Had an interesting conversation with Marcus yesterday about a variety of things, which got me thinking on the proper place of blogs. What do folks here (who presumably are familiar with at least two blog "communities") think on the subject. What purpose to blogs serve in the wider world?

As I see it there are several reasons on might keep a blog

1. Boredom. Reading and writing blogs is a great way to "kill time"
2. Therapuetic. Writing out one's thoughts is therapeutic.
3. Connection. Reading about others provides support and insight.
4. Efficiency. Posting a single blog is an effective newsletter.
5. Publishing. You have something to say and want to share it.
6. Tactical. Your publication furthers personal or political aims.

Among the types of blogs I see routinely are

1. Professional. Used by writers, consultants and politicians.
2. Familial. Used to efficiently convey news to distant family.
3. Sexual. Used primarily as a way to identify folks to date.
4. Display. Used to connect to others and find or assert identity.
5. Personal. Used in a combination of ways, from therapy to drama.

Some blog sites are more interested in one type of blog than another. TypePad, for example, is a good professional blog, while MySpace and Tribe are primarily sexual. LiveJournal (being one of the earlier and more popular blog spaces) has almost no professional blogs. Blogspot tends to be about display while MySpace and Tribe are primarily sexual and personal.

Stereotypical bloggers fall into one of several types

1. Teenager. Blog explores identity, finds allies, jockeys for position.
2. Political. Blog asserts opinion, channels rage, asserts identity.
3. Housewife. Blog narrates, connects, seeks support.
4. Networker. Blog advertises, prospects for clients/dates, connects.

Few blogs are purely of one type or another, and almost all ongoing blogs start with one primary purpose and then morph into several others, whether the author intends this or not. A blog that begins as a husband and father posting a few pics of the kids to save bandwidth for his far-flung relatives will (unless consciously designed to avoid this) almost inevitably draw comments and neighborly interaction as people ask questions or seek connections. An avuncular fellow he will offer jovial advice as he is able and may decide to pursue aspects of the other blog types. The sixteen-year-old who starts posting for a few friends will find support and expand into networking, perhaps finding new hobbies, friends, dates and then starting a small business of some sort (usually making clothes or crafts). In many ways this tendency for blogs to morph is one of the things I find most interesting about them.

A blog begins as one thing, but because it connects to a person it becomes many other things in an organic way. People are complex, and even the most stereotypical blogger is smarter and more interesting than one would expect. Frequently as one reads a particular blog one can observe how a person grows and develops in inspiring or cautionary ways. The man who starts off as a right-wing blowhard begins to explore himself and then destroys his family. The awkward teen finds support and community to thrive. The lonely soldier far away goes through hard times and becomes an activist. An individual in another country provides cultural and political insight that helps you see your world in a different light.

Blogs are alternately inspiring and banal because life is alternatively exciting and banal. Blogs are human connection because people are human connection, deep or interesting in proportion to the author behind them and the reader. As "social texts" blogs provide a way for people to bring themselves to the page, reading it but also others and themselves. Blogs are a useful tool for exposition and reflection, two of the higher callings for any letters.

However, they've added a new feature where you must type in the combination of letters and numbers you see on the screen to confirm that you are a human, and not a robot. I have no problem with this step, however, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO READ THE FRIGGIN' CHARACTERS.

I just tried literally 9 times with 4-5 separate combos and not one of them were accepted. The characters appear with a sort of scratchy text, I guess to throw off machines with OCR capability. Well guess what LJ -- it throws off us humans too!

IF given the opportunity to meet a name from the LJ community or your own friends list that is across the continent would you actually want to meet them inreal life?

Why or whynot?

What brought this on? Well, I'm taking a break from college to pay off some loans and will be driving over the road / OTR within the next week ..... so "those on my FL in LJ" are already aware of this so I'm curious about y'all on here. I'm not sure which company I'll accept yet but, rest asured I'll have decided by next wednesaday- March 9th? :>)
who knows i'd even offer to meet anyone from *here* if it timed right for the route i happen to be driving - ya know?

And, as I am *very new* to Tribe, I thought I'd introduce myself like I did on LJ in the year 2000 -- By giving 30 random facts about me.. (Oh! and I opened up my own tribe with this, so I hope that doesn't make anyone angry.. it's the only way I could think of to introduce myself..)

1. My full birth name, Jane Lynn Timm, was turned into the nickname "Gelatin" in middle school. When my parents disowned me, for the third and final time, I had my name legally changed to Ceara Jaen Baxter. On August 19, 2001, I held a funeral for Jane Timm Baxter – burnt a copy of my birth certificate, a baby picture of me and my old Social Security card, then put in the ashes in a cardboard coffin and buried it in the backyard. I sent out invitations to Jane’s funeral (six attended) and then had a birthday party for Ceara Jaen Baxter. Obviously, none of my biological family attended – although my Grandmother (who is the only biological family member who loves me) did send flowers and a birthday card.
2. My birth (being female) is recorded in medical journals because I am considered a medical impossibility due to my mother's hormonal imbalance.
3. I have seven sisters who never made it to viable birth.
4. I used to be able to do math homework with one hand and English homework with the other at the same time.
5. My IQ is 176.
6. I am a very good liar, but I really don’t do it, and I don't lie about important things. Just stupid shit that there really is no point in lying about, to either entertain (and then I always admit I’m bullshitting) or to cover my ass.
7. I was once a shop lifter.
8. I've been in and out of therapy FOREVER.
9. I have a birthmark on my face that looks like a bruise but only shows up when I'm very angry.
10. I'm a cutter.
11. I almost died in January 2000, and, indeed, had one of those “near death experiences.” It was interesting, but not like others that I have heard about.
12. I am very loyal to my friends, but I don't have many.
13. My favorite flower is the daisy.
14. I don't like diamonds very much, even though that's my birthstone; I prefer amethyst.
15. I can't spell worth a damn.
16. I am prone to periods of complete disassociation.
17. I am an integrated survivor of MPD (Or DID, whichever initials you prefer for multiple personality disorder.)
18. I have a tendency to act however I am dressed, and will unconsciously take on the accents of people that I'm around.
19. I practice prayer, magic, healings, hexes, meditation and all that kind of stuff but refuse to label myself as a member of any single organized religion, even though I have been: a high priestess of the Dianic Sect, a Western Sufi Mystic and an ordained Charismatic minister. Big Whoop.
20. I chew on the ends of my hair when I'm nervous.
21. I have a trophy for being born, given by my mom's bowling league. The only Friday they didn't bowl was Good Friday, so mom popped out me instead.
22. I have been struck by lightning. Twice.
23. I have always wanted to go swimming naked, but I never have.
24. I get sick all the time. So much so, in fact, that the nickname for me listed in my senior yearbook was "Absent."
25. I was stoned by some teens from the local church for being a witch when I was twelve.
26. I collect Disney animation movies and troll dolls.
27. I'm allergic to ALL grasses.
28. I didn't learn how to drive until I was 20.
29. I like spider jewelry, spider art and spider knick-knacks, but I don't like the real little suckers.
30. My thirty-third birthday will be on Easter 2009.

Bet you're all glad you know this crap, right?

So, look me up on LJ as "theauthoress," or visit my site at www.cearajaen.com, or join my tribe: CJ Needs Friends!

It seems like some people take the term entirely too literally.

From the Department of Righteous Indignation:

As some of you may have noticed, LiveJournal users as a "subculture" have been the subject of much Internet mockery, some of if not altogether undeserved. Let's face it, for every genuinely interesting (or at least inoffensive) journal, there are dozens of subliterate, self-absorbed screeds vomited onto the Net by whiny teen and twenty-something drama queens crying onto their Hot Topic t-shirts.

I'm certain that at least some of you have encountered something on LJ that released your piss and vinegar valve, perhaps to such a degree that it made you question why you were even there. Go ahead and vent a little, you'll feel better. For me, it's the following:

1. People who write something incendiary or just plain tactless in a public entry, often in regard to another individual, then seem genuinely surprised when their bonehead statement comes back to haunt them. What is it about having a blog that causes some people to hemorrhage common sense faster than sand through a sieve? If you didn't want the target of your rant to find out about it, then why in God's name did you publish it for the entire frickin' planet to read?

2. The act of indicating a certain individual by the first letter of his or her name (or some term or epithet like "the guy" or "that annoying bitch"). Precisely who is this supposed to fool? If I know you and/or your friends, then chances are I'll know who you're talking about. If I don't, then I probably don't care (or read your journal). You haven't exactly challenged me to decipher the Enigma code, here.

3. Liberally peppering one's journal with terms like "w00t," the "<3" symbol, and their ilk. If you have a habit of doing this and you're not a 13-year-old girl (or pretending to be one), how do you respect yourself at all? For your sake and mine, let's give the 'Tween Talk a rest, shall we?

4. Writing entirely in lower case (or caps), applying punctuation like Jackson Pollock applied paint (also known as "Diarrhea of the Keyboard"). Are you being lazy or artsy? If it's the former, then why are you even bothering to write a 500-word essay on the quality of your lunch or a blow-by-blow synopsis of that dream you had about Legolas last night?

There's always some kind of announcement like, "the green santa cluster on the ribeye chef server went down, but we're implementing new code we haven't tested yet, so be patient, etc., etc." I understand that problems happen, but I thought that reliability was one of the advantages of a paid service. It seems like even free services like Xanga and Blurty are more reliable. So what is it? Do they need more money from us?

I don't know if it's the idea of having an ONLINE journal that very few people can access or the fact that ordinarily I am a private person. I'm an extrovert, I am very friendly and outgoing...but I am also the type to have to have alone time.
